About the Texas Lottery

The lottery in Texas was launched in 1992 and has since established itself as one of the most successful state lotteries. It’s awarded over $43 billion in prizes, with the top winner thus far claiming $227 million in 2019. Its first offering was Lone Star Millions, a scratch game that resulted in over 20 million tickets sold on the first day, setting a world record. There are now 17 draws in eight different games: Pick 3, Daily 4, All or Nothing, Cash Five, Lotto Texas, Texas Two-Step, Powerball, and Mega Millions.

The Texas Lottery allocates a significant portion of its revenue to fund various sectors. Overall, it’s contributed around $25 billion to education and more than $130 million to Texas veterans. When Texas residents play the lottery, they’re increasing their chances of winning the jackpot, but they’re also improving others’ lives.

Texas Lottery FAQ

If you’re over the age of 18, you can buy lottery tickets at licensed retailers. This is the only legal option in Texas since online purchases and sales by phone and mail aren’t allowed.

Additionally, you can buy tickets in advance for every lottery game. Cash Five allows up to 12 advanced draws, while Lotto Texas, Texas Two Step, Powerball, and Mega Millions offer ten advanced draws. You can purchase a maximum of 24 advanced draws for the remaining lottery games.

There are various lottery games you can play in Texas. Furthermore, many of these games occur several times a day, which means you have multiple chances of winning. In total, there are 17 different draws in eight different games, each with their own Texas Lottery numbers:

Pick 3 Morning, Day, Evening, Night - Choose three numbers between 0-9

Daily 4 Morning, Day, Evening, Night - Choose four numbers between 0-9

All or Nothing Morning, Day, Evening, Night - Choose 12 numbers between 1-24

Cash Five - Choose five numbers between 1-35

Lotto Texas - Choose six numbers between 1-54

Texas Two Step - Choose four numbers between 1-35 along with an additional number

Texas Lottery Powerball - Choose five numbers between 1-69 and another number between 1-26

Texas Lottery Mega Millions - Choose five numbers between 1-70 and an extra number between 1-25

All games offer a top prize, while Lotto Texas, Texas Two Step, Powerball, and Mega Millions have a jackpot up for grabs. Furthermore, take note that you can’t play the Texas Lottery Lucky for Life game.

If you win a prize worth $599 or less, you can claim it at your local retailer or visit one of the Texas Lottery Claim Centers. Additionally, you can choose to post your signed ticket via registered mail to the Texas State Lottery.

Prizes worth $600 or more can be claimed at any of the Texas Lottery Claim Centers. Alternatively, you can complete a claim form and mail it to the Texas Lottery. Remember to sign the back of your ticket and post it as well.

You can claim any prize over $2.5 million at the Texas Lottery Commission in Austin. You’ll need to make an appointment and visit the center in person.

If you submit your claim via post, you can expect to wait between four to six weeks to receive your winnings. Additionally, you must claim any winning tickets within 180 days.

To win in the Texas Lottery, you need to select the same numbers picked in the draw. For instance, Lotto Texas incorporates numbers 1-54, and its rules state that you must choose six numbers within this range.

If you correctly predict all six of the Texas Lottery winning numbers, you’ll win the grand jackpot. However, you can still win some cash if you manage to match a minimum of two numbers.

Although there have been many Texas Lottery winners, the largest payout occurred in October 2019, when a Leander resident won $227 million in the Mega Millions jackpot. The winner went with the cash option and received $157,091,592 in a single lump sum.
