About the Missouri Lottery
The Missouri State Lottery was approved in 1985, and has been in business since early 1986. It’s a veritable institution in the Show Me state. The organization is in the hands of a five-member bipartisan commission, appointed by the Governor and approved by the state legislature.
Commissioners vote to choose the Executive Director, overseeing the entire program. The current director is May Scheve Reardon, elected in 2009. Initially, only 45% of revenue was distributed back to winners. These days, that number is as high as 70%.
With over six billion dollars in total proceeds from the lottery, Missouri has funded a number of educational initiatives. After the 1992 vote on Amendment 11, it's also entirely dedicated to funding public education. All revenues generated by the state's lotto since July 1993 have funded various educational programs in the state.
There’s no set allocation, as the Senate votes on lotto fund appropriation each year. However, 4% of the Education budget is funded by proceeds. This includes public elementary schools, high schools and college scholarships. The funds have helped establish programs like Virtual Schools or the Special Education Excess Costs program.
Missouri Lottery FAQ
There are many different ways to play the state lotto. You can buy a scratcher and win instant prizes, redeemable with any official lottery agent. If you want a chance at even bigger prizes, you’ll have to buy a ticket for the lotto game, and wait for the drawings.
You can only buy them in person, with no online purchase options yet. That said, there’s a Missouri Lottery app, which you can use to check your tickets.
The Missouri Lottery ticket scanner, built into the app, tells you if you have a winner, and how much you’ve won. You still need to redeem in person, though.
The largest prize in the history of Missouri Lottery winners went to Cindy and Mark Hill. These Dearborn residents hit it big with a 293 million dollar Powerball win in November 2012.
While many state lottos have moved their drawings online, MO hasn’t. You can still catch the results of Missouri Lottery drawings on live television. The channel you need to tune into depends on where you are.
In St. Louis, it’s KTVI Fox 2, while in Hannibal, it’s on WGEM Channel 10. Kansas City residents can watch Missouri Lottery results on WDAF Fox 4. However, in Columbia and Jefferson City, it’s aired on KQFX Fox 38.
Your chances of getting the Missouri Lottery winning numbers depend on the game you choose. For example, a Missouri Lottery scratch ticket has about 1 in 4 chances of winning a cash prize. For the Lotto game, chances of coming into any kind of prize are 1 in 20.
However, winning the big jackpot is a little harder than that. Chances are roughly 1 in 3.5 million, according to the official website.
The Missouri Lottery numbers are drawn biweekly, on Wednesday and Saturday, at 8:59 PM. The Pick 3 and Pick 4 games have two daily drawings, at 12:45 PM and 8:59 PM.
The Missouri Lottery Mega Millions drawing happens twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays, at 10 PM. The Missouri Lottery Powerball is drawn Wednesdays and Saturdays, at 9:59 PM CT. However, the Missouri Lottery Lucky for Life drawings are every Monday and Thursday, at 9:38 PM.
The Missouri Lottery second chance program lets you compete for huge prizes with your old tickets. If your draw or scratch tickets are a dud, use them as Missouri Lottery codes on the Second Chance portal. It’s offered by the state lotto’s official club, available on their website.
Some of the games and promotions in the MO lotto will dole out special vouchers. These can be redeemed for extra tickets, cash bonuses or other prizes, depending on the offer in question.
You can redeem any prize under $600 at the same location you purchased the ticket. For prizes above $600, you’ll need to visit an official MO lotto center. A list of locations is available at the top of this page.
