The New York Lottery

The lottery in New York started in 1967 and is fully state-operated. In 2013, it merged its operations with the New York State Racing and Wagering Board, which resulted in the newly formed New York State Gaming Commission.

It joined the national lotteries, Powerball and Mega Millions, in 2009, and now offers eight other games. These include New York Lotto, Pick 10, Take 5, Cash4Life, Numbers Midday and Evening, and Win 4 Midday and Evening.

Initially, its motto was “Your Chance of a Lifetime to Help Education,” inspired by the state’s pledge to fund education with the lottery’s profits. The New York Lottery upheld its promise, raising over $68 billion to date, and continues to support schools to this day.

However, it’s since changed its slogan to “Hey, you never know.”
