About the West Virginia Lottery

The West Virginia State Lottery first started in the mid-80s, amidst a wave of new US lotteries. It was approved by a voter referendum in 1984, with a broad 67% support. The bill was signed off by the governor the following year.

WV is one of the states with the smallest percentage of revenue returned to winners. West Virginia Lottery winners get a measly 15% of revenues in prizes. The rest of the money goes towards a series of state social, educational, and welfare programs.

To date, this lottery has generated more than 10 billion dollars in revenue for the state’s coffers. These funds go towards education (more than $3.4 billion since 1986), senior citizen programs ($1.3 billion), and tourism ($1.1 billion).

The WVSL is a charter member of the MUSL (Multi-State Lottery Association). It participates in several multi-jurisdictional operations like the West Virginia Lottery Mega Millions and Powerball draws. However, there’s currently no West Virginia Lottery Lucky for Life game.

West Virginia Lottery FAQ

Who Won the Biggest Ever West Virginia Lottery?

The largest jackpot ever paid out by the WVSL was a $315 million West Virginia Lottery Powerball prize. It was won on Christmas Day, in 2002, by Jack Whittaker.

It was the largest jackpot on record in any US lotto ever, at the time. Whittaker would go on to take the cash option rather than the annuity, though. In the end, he walked away with a cool $170.5 million.

What TV Channel Is the West Virginia Lottery On?

The results of the West Virginia Lottery draws are carried by several local stations and newspapers. You can watch the West Virginia Lottery results on WSAZ News Channel 3. In addition, video feeds of the draws are streamed on the official WVSL website.

What Are the Odds of Winning the West Virginia Lottery?

The odds of winning a prize in the WVSL depend on the game you play. The Daily 3 game has odds ranging from 1 in 167 to 1 in 1,000 (for the top prize).
