The Maine Lottery


The Maine State Lottery is one of the oldest of its kind in the US. Lottery in Maine was first established in 1974, via a vote referendum. It was also one of the very first members of the Multi-State Lottery Association. However, the MSL opted out of the MUSL the year Powerball came out.


It wouldn’t rejoin the MUSL until 2004 when the Maine Lottery Powerball finally became available. The state would go on to join several other multi-jurisdictional lotto games. These include Hot Lotto, in 2009, Mega Millions, in 2010, and Lucky for Life, in 2012.


Income generated by ticket sales is given back to Maine Lottery winners, retailers, and the state’s General Fund. Approximately 65% of the revenue goes towards prizes. 


Another 21% goes to the state, 6.5% to retailers, and 7.5% towards administrative costs. Proceeds from the lotto are used to fund many different social programs across the state.


Today, the organization offers both Maine Lottery scratch tickets and draw games. However, none of the latter are actually drawn in-state. All draw games offered are either multi-jurisdictional or tri-state draw games, shared with New Hampshire and Vermont.

Interestingly, the state lotto has never sold a single winning Powerball ticket. To date, the same can be said for Mega Millions.

While the Lucky for Life drawings have also failed to produce a jackpot winner, the Tri-State MegaBucks game rendered the largest payout in the state lotto’s history. The $16.4 million prize, won in January 1992, was split between two Maine ticket holders.

If you want to watch Maine Lottery results live, drawings are aired by WAGM-TV in Presque Isle. In Portland, you can tune into WPFO-TV. Those in the Bangor area can follow results of Maine Lottery through WABI-TV.

While the lotto has its own dedicated YouTube channel, it doesn’t publish the drawings. You can check the Maine Lottery winning numbers online through the official website or via the Maine Lottery app. It’s available for Android and iOS.

You’ll have around a 1 in 4 chance of winning any cash prize for instant scratch tickets. However, the odds of scoring the top prize range between 1 in 80,000 and 1 in 650,000 (depending on the scratcher).

Draw games have their own odds as well. For Gimme 5, these numbers range from 1:10 (for $2 prizes) to 1:575,757 (for a $100,000 prize). On the other hand, a person hitting the Tri-State Megabucks Plus jackpot has a 1 in 4,496,388 chance.

If you win the Lotto America jackpot, your ticket would be 1 out of 25,989,600. In contrast, the Powerball odds stand at 1:292,201,338, for the big jackpot. As for the Maine Lottery Mega Millions, odds to win are 1 in 302,575,350.

Taking part in the lotto games is surprisingly easy. The rules depend on the game, but they’re all fairly straightforward. Buy your ticket, wait for a drawing, and check the Maine Lottery numbers to see whether you’re a winner. It’s that simple.

For instant scratchers, the process is even easier. Buy your ticket, peel away, reveal your prizes, and redeem your winnings.

There are several different drawings in the ME lotto. Pick 3 and Pick 4 drawings take place daily, at 1:10 PM and 6:50 PM.

Gimme 5 drawings are on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, at 6:59 PM. You can also find out the winning numbers of the Megabucks Plus on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 7:59 PM.

The Maine Lottery Lucky for Life drawings are on Mondays and Thursdays, at 10:38 PM. However, the Powerball and Lotto America numbers are revealed on Wednesdays and Saturdays, while the Mega Millions draw takes place on Tuesdays and Fridays. Powerball drawings are at 10:59 PM, with Mega Millions and Lotto America at 11 PM.

Maine Lottery Second Chance promotions allow select games and tickets to participate in new drawings. This applies whenever you buy an eligible scratcher and fail to win a prize.

All you need to do is input the Maine Lottery codes into the official Player’s Club website. Online, a Maine Lottery ticket scanner will then enter your ticket into the next drawing.

The ME lotto incorporates a player loyalty and rewards program, called the Player’s Club. This club gives players access to special offers, discounts, and promotions. Many of these promotions include special vouchers, which can be redeemed for anything from merchandise to cash prizes.

If your ticket is a winner, you’ll need to cash it in. It’s a pretty simple process. If your prize is under $600, then you can claim it at any local lotto retailer.

However, if your prize exceeds $600, then you’ll need to head on over to a claim center or lotto office. You’ll find a list of locations at the top of this page. In addition, claiming by courier or mail is also possible.
